Trail and Rig Requirements

We have to have some equipment requirements to help ensure we all have a safe and enjoyable off-road experience. Mohawk 4×4 Adventures will make sure you are aware of the trail ratings and requirements before you sign up to participate. Our volunteers may inspect vehicles for required equipment at any time before beginning our adventures, and we may include checklists. If we find missing or non-conforming equipment, we will discuss it. If it is not safe to continue, we may decide it is safest to not have a rig participate.

All of our 4×4 trail rides require this minimum equipment list below. This list is accurate for ALL Trails.

  • Four Wheel Drive with Low Range
  • Working seat belts for all passengers and they must be used correctly
  • First Aid Kit
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Full size spare tire
  • Properly installed front and rear recovery points – and they are subject to inspection
  • At least 29″ tall tires, such as 225/75R16. Often, larger tires will be part of the requirements.
  • 2 Way Radios, FMRS/GMRS
  • All vehicles participating in our events must have proper registration is their home state, with license plates. Almost every trail ride we do will require driving on streets or a public right of way that requires license plates.
  • All trail rides in Massachusetts require the MA OHV Registration for participation, on public and private property. It is the law and our club has chosen to support the state’s inititative.

The minimum requirement list is subject to changes to match trail difficulties. See below.

BLUE Trail Requirements and Recommendations

  • All of the above, except tires must be at least 31″ and upgraded to AT or MT aggressive tread. 33″ or taller tires are highly recommended.

BLACK Trail Requirements and Recommendations

  • 33″ minimum tire size is required
  • A working winch AND at least one locking differential are REQUIRED
  • A second locking differential is highly recommended
  • Upgraded steering linkages are recommended
  • 4WD vehicles on black trails should definitely have upgraded or additional skid plates, rocker protection and additional body armor

DOUBLE BLACK Trail Requirements

  • When we announce a trail ride with double black requirements, the 4×4 vehicle must have two locking differentials and a working winch.

RED Trail Requirements

  • All of the above and a minimum tire size of 35″.
  • We do not currently schedule RED Trail events but we do encounter optional, RED obstacles.
