Massachusetts law, Chapter 90b, require 4WD SUV passenger vehicles be registered through the MA Environmental Bureau of Registrations for recreational use and pleasure. This law is applicable on public and private property. This includes any Public Right of Way on unmaintained roads, private property, or off of any Public Way. A public way is a road that is maintained for safe travel by any passenger vehicle. We do not recreate on Public Ways, although we enjoy legal use of Public Right of Ways.

Mohawk 4×4 Adventures, Inc began to require member’s vehicles and guest vehicles used for off-roading to be registered with the MA Environmntal Police Bureau of Registrations in 2018. You may be subject to tickets or worse by law enforcement without it! This is your responsibility to be legal when off-roading in Massachusetts.
25% of registration fees are allocated to a fund for land acquisition and trail opportunities within Massachusetts. 25% of the fund must be used each year for its mission.
Registration is easy to complete by mail, or in person, as long as your rig meets the requirement of a valid street registration in your home state. *** Mohawk 4×4 Adventures HIGHLY recommends using the Worcester or Springfield Offices! *** Our club does also require proper registration in your state (license plates, etc), so it should be a straightforward process for members to register 4WD vehicles used in the club. The decals are to be permanently affixed to each front fender. The expiration date goes on the driver’s side and the other decal goes on the passenger side.
What is required to register my rig for the OHV Permit and Registration?
- A copy of your 4×4 registration (This is valid proof of sales tax)
- A completed application (A photo of the current application is below)
- A check if done by mail. A debited card or check if done in person. (These registrations are easily renewed online)
You receive two decals for your vehicle with your registration number, one expiration date, and a card you must carry with you that is your permit.
