Hawley to Florida, MA Clean Up – 2021

This clean up was something we did with almost no planning. We knew the route had a lot of cans and bits of trash. Eric, Cindy, Cody, Lindsey and I, picked out the route to bring us to Old Florida Rd. We got some trash bags and and picked up all the trash we could. The Savoy Mountain State Forest gave us permission to use the dumpsters behind their office for disposal.

Adult ciders and iced teas have been popular trash where unauthorized users like to drink.
Eric, Cindy and their dog. We stopped frequently during this long day.
Cody and that clown, Mike, getting trash out of the mud. We stopped about every fifty feet, and in some cases, had to venture 25ft off the road to pick up trash.
The gates in the picture are at Old Florida Rd. Two things happen here that triggered the gate installation. Let’s briefly review this and simple solutions.
1. Littering – If you’re using this Public Right of Way and find litter, bring it to the Savoy Mountain DCR Office (not the campground) on Central Shaft Rd.
260 Central Shaft Rd, Florida, MA 01247
Properly dispose of bagged trash in their dumpsters directly behind the building. If the office is open, let the staff know. If you have non-conforming items, like tires, electronics or furniture, you have to call first. 413 663 8469
2. Trespassing – The Right of Way is 17 feet on center of the trail alignment. There is one legal go-around and it is a long way away from the hardest obstacles. That means that any deviation from the trail is trespassing on state land or private property. STAY ON THE TRAIL.
We received permission before our clean up to use these dumpsters behind the DCR Office. Check out our 2023 Earth Day at Old Florida Rd to see our large scale effort to clean up around the trail head.
